6 Simple and Creative DIY Shelving Ideas

Shelves are great for using the empty spaces and walls of your home in the most innovative ways possible. You can always opt for DIY shelves as you can adjust according to the empty space accessible and also harmonize with the decor of the house.

6 Simple and Creative DIY Shelving Ideas

Here are six simple and easy DIY shelving ideas that you can try.

DIY Hanging Shelves

Supplies:

  • Wooden Whiteboards
  • Rope Cord
  • Metal Rings
  • Scissors
  • Saw & Drill

Method:
Cut the boards or use it as per your requirement and the strength of the rope cord.
Drill two holes on the opposite side of the board. Use the measuring tape to drill holes symmetric to the first side so there would be no balancing issues.
To hang the shelf, you need to cut the cord into two according to your desired length. Also, make sure you consider the knotted ends which will hold the boards safely.
Take the ring and knot around it. Pull the strands of the rope through the drill holes on both the sides.
Adjust the length of the cord according to the desired height of the hanging shelves.
Trim the excess cord and hang the shelves on the wall.

DIY Honeycomb Shelves

Supplies:

  • Five honeycomb DIY shelves.
  • Miter Saw
  • Clamp
  • Electric Screwdriver or drill
  • Sandpaper
  • Two 1×4 10-foot whitewood boards
  • Wood Glue
  • Two L brackets
  • 1.25-inch nails
  • Small screws
  • Stain or paint

Method:
Set the Miter saw at 30-degree angle and cut the whiteboard (6 inches each).
Once you have 30 pieces of wood, assemble the wood pieces in a hexagon arrangement. Glue the edges and clamp one to the other to nail them together.
You can pre-drill the hole to make the task much easier.
Once all the five hexagons are ready, sand the edges of the hexagons.
Now, stain or paint them with the color of your choice.
Let it dry for some time and then, arrange the hexagons in honeycomb arrangement and screw them together.
Hang by screwing them on the wall on the 2 L brackets to make the structure sturdy.

Small Copper Pipe Shelves

Supplies:

  • Copper Pipe Hooks 1/2″ x 6″
  • Cork Coasters
  • Gold Scissors
  • Cardboard (if extra support needed for the cork coasters)
  • Washi Tape for decoration

Method:
Cut the cork coaster in half and attach the same sized cardboard using glue for extra support in case the cork coasters are too delicate.
Position the copper pipe hooks and secure it with glue to the cork coasters.
Secure and decorate the coasters to the copper pipe hooks with the help of washi tapes.
Hang the little shelves on the wall. Make sure to use these shelves to hold small decorative pieces or plants as these are small and delicate.

DIY Frame Shelves

Supplies:

  • Photo Frame
  • 1×4 wood boards
  • Wood Glue
  • Nail Gun
  • 1 1/4″ brad nails
  • Spray Paint (color of your choice)

Method:
Start off with measuring the frame available and cut the wooden boards as per the measurement of the frame.
Now, use the wooden pieces and make a box using glue and nail gun.
With the help of glue attach the box to the frame and secure it with 1 1/4″ brad nails to the frame.
Use wood filler for nail holes to give a smooth finish to it.
Color it and hang the frame boxes on the wall one color dries up.

Modern Industrial Wood Slice Shelf

Supplies:

  • 14″ wood slice
  • 4″ L brackets
  • Saw
  • Drill and screws

Method:

First of all, measure the center of the wood slice and cut it into a half.
Now, place the L brackets on the wood slice and screw it on the wood.
Once screwed properly, screw them into the wall.

Suspended Wood and Leather Shelf

Supplies:

  • Cowhide leather strip 1.5″ x 50″
  • Whitewood board (as per the desired length)
  • 3 x 1.5″ brass flat-head Phillips head wood screw
  • Metallic gold spray paint
  • X-Acto knife
  • Tape measure
  • Screwdriver
  • Drill

Method:
Start by spray-painting the edges of the whiteboard (you can use a painter’s tape to cover the bottom and top of the board). 2-3 coats will be enough for a durable finish.
Now, with the help of measuring tape and X-Acto knife, find the middle of the leather strip and cut it in a half.
Fold each strap in half and drill a hole, 1/2″ from the end of the strap.
Create two loops by screwing it to the wall.
Now, place the wood board in the loops and screw it on the straps at both ends.
